Convention Restrictions for the 2001 IWBC

The purpose of these convention rules is to limit only systems and conventions which are both unusual and destructive.

For the purposes of these regulations "weak" refers to any call which systemically has a lower limit of 8 HCP or fewer. All methods not forbidden are permitted.

The following methods are forbidden.

  1. All conventional opening bids or overcalls which could be weak and which have no known anchor suit are disallowed regardless of level, except for:
    1. Multi 2D opening (with heart and spade suits as the weak options.)
    2. Defenses to any conventional call by the opponents, or any notrump opening by the opponents.
  2. Opening bids at the one level which may, by agreement, contain fewer than 8 high card points.
  3. Forcing pass systems (in which an opening pass forces partner to bid).
  4. Conventional opening bids which may be psyched. This rule bars the psyching of conventional opening bids (Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge, Law 40D; interpretation of the WBF Laws Commission.). This does not prohibit minor deviations from conventional opening bids.
  5. Two-way opening bids which show either length or shortness in a suit, specified or unspecified.
  6. Encrypted lead and carding methods.
  7. Dual-message carding methods, except at each defenderšs first discard.
